Is Domain Age a Ranking Factor?

Let’s get straight into it. No, domain age is not a direct ranking factor.
But the age of a domain does matter indirectly.

The official stance of Google (reiterated by Search Advocate John Mueller) is that the age of a domain name, whether it was registered yesterday or in 2016, does not inherently give you a ranking boost. The greatest advantage of an older domain isn’t the age itself, but the years of head start it provides to accumulate the backlinks, user trusts, and authority signals that truly drive rankings.

Domain Age Myths vs. Reality

Older sites rank better because Google "trusts" old domains

Sites don’t rank better just because of their age. They tend to rank better because time has allowed for more backlinks to be built, more content to be published, and for the site to become an authority and trustworthy source in its industry.

Sometimes you may come across an expired domain that does have relevance to a product or service you offer, and it could make sense to purchase. However, buying an old domain that has a “toxic” history or an irrelevant niche could impact you and any other linked sites to the point of penalisation.

Note: If you are thinking about this as a strategy, perhaps read the Google blog on Expired domain abuse.

New sites are "sandboxed" for 6 months

Google doesn’t have a formal sandbox; instead, new sites require time to be indexed and processed, proving to Google that they, and the content shared, are trustworthy, relevant and high-quality.

Why Domain Age Appears to Matter

While the “age” digit itself isn’t a factor, the things that happen over time are:

  • Backlink Profile: It’s much easier for a 10-year-old site to have thousands of natural links from reputable sources. A brand-new site starts at zero.
  • Content Depth: An older site has likely covered more topics in-depth, establishing Topical Authority.
  • Brand Recognition: Older domains often have higher “branded search” volume (people searching specifically for their name), which is a massive trust signal for Google.
  • E-E-A-T: Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, and Trustworthiness all take time to demonstrate. Google’s AI systems look for a track record of stability. We cover more on E-E-A-T in our blog.

"Host Age" and The Sandbox

While Google denies a “Sandbox” exists, 2024 data leaks and 2026 SEO research suggest they use an attribute often called hostAge.

This isn’t used to rank you higher, but rather as a “training” period. Google may limit the reach of very new domains until it is sure the site isn’t a “throwaway” spam site or a “fly-by-night” scam.

What Should You Focus on Instead?

Are you planning on launching a new site? Don’t worry about the age of your domain. Instead, focus on these three pillars to “age” your site faster in Google’s eyes:

  • Content Freshness & Velocity: Don’t just post once a month. Post high-quality, original content consistently to show that your site is a knowledgeable and trustworthy source of information. Make sure you have an active content plan at hand so you are never without content ideas!
  • Technical Excellence: Ensure your Core Web Vitals are well managed, and you’ve considered user experience as well and how the site will work on a mobile device. Make sure the technical fundamentals are in place to help Google access and navigate your site as well as any AI tools.
  • Niche Authority: Don’t try to cover everything. Be the absolute best resource for one specific sub-topic first. Consider key areas for your industry and draft as many content ideas as possible.

Final Thought

Domain age is a correlation, not a causation. A brand-new domain with incredible content and a few high-quality, relevant backlinks can, and often does, outrank a decade-old domain that has become stagnant or irrelevant.

Domain age isn’t something to get hung up on. Instead, put your effort and time into the technical areas of your site and make sure that your content answers potential users’ questions in search.
